Benteke puts World Cup talk on hold

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

Belgium international Christian Benteke insists he isn’t thinking about this summer’s World Cup as his focus is on Aston Villa.

Villa are currently 11th in the Premier League table and are six points clear of safety.

Benteke insists his side will treat every game as if it were a “cup final” in the closing stages of the season and hopes to add to his goal tally.

“I just try to help the team and if I can score every game it’s good,” he said in the Daily Star.

“We have to treat these 10 games like cup finals. We have to do everything to produce 10 good performances and we’ll see where it leaves us.

“But the most important thing for me is the team and to try and win every game.”

Benteke featured for his national side in their recent 2-2 draw with the Ivory Coast and he admits he is looking forward to the World Cup in Brazil this summer, with Belgium available at 15.00 to win the tournament.

However, the striker insists that his priority at present is Aston Villa and he is desperate to impress between now and the end of the season.

He added: “I’m not thinking about the World Cup just now. My focus is on Villa first. I want to finish the season well and after that we will see what happens.

“Coming back after international duty and you can see in training that the confidence of the lads is high. Now I’m hoping we can bring this confidence into the game with Chelsea [on Saturday].”

Villa face Chelsea on Saturday and Benteke can be backed at 8.50 to score the first goal of the game or 3.50 to find the back of the net at any time.
