Bell: Bears need to start better

England batsman Ian Bell believes his county, Warwickshire, have to avoid slow starts to mount a challenge for the County Championship division one title.

The Edgbaston outfit have won two of their opening five Championship games so far this summer, but have also lost two, with Bell admitting that his side have left themselves with an uphill task because of slow starts.

He told the Birmingham Mail: “Warwickshire have the potential to win the title, definitely. What we can’t do is give teams a session start as we have done in a couple of games.

“We were all out on the first morning against Sussex and, although we fought back well, in the end that gave us too much to do.

“Then last week we let Yorkshire get to 100-1, albeit we were a bit unlucky because at times we were beating the bat two or three times an over.

“But the first session of a match can really dictate how it goes. Especially in a division as strong as the championship First Division is this year, you can’t give teams a session start.”

Meanwhile, Warwickshire can be backed at 13.00 to win the Royal London One-Day Cup this season, with Nottinghamshire 7.50 and Sussex 12.00.
