Bears turn to former Denver coach Fox

John Fox was recently axed by the Broncos.

The Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos remain the last two teams with open coaching vacancies following Saturday’s confirmation that John Fox is the new man in Chicago.

The Bears moved quickly to hire the former Denver head coach after Fox was dismissed, by the Broncos, following their loss to the Indianapolis Colts last week.

A clash of personalities with general manager, and Super Bowl winner, John Elway and an inability to build on four successive trips to the post-season was cited by many in the media even if the official announcement was a disingenuous mutual parting of the ways.

Meanwhile, over in the Bay Area, the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders also concluded their searches with the hiring of Jim Tomsula and Jack Del Rio respectively. Each in their own way may be a very smart hire even if the running of Jim Harbaugh out of town by the Niners still remains a baffling decision.

A long-time assistant coach with the 49ers, Tomsula is a favourite within the organisation and well-respected by the players. That’s a useful combination although the fan base remains distinctly unhappy at the machinations that drove Harbaugh back to the college game and the Michigan Wolverines.

Del Rio on the other hand kept the Jacksonville Jaguars relevant for a number of years – no mean feat – as their head coach and comes over from a stint as the defensive coordinator with the Broncos on John Fox’s staff.

Indianapolis are available at 9.00 to win Super Bowl XLIX, while the Seattle Seahawks can be backed at 2.15.
