Baxter seeks more mature Chiefs

Exeter Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter warned his side to tighten up if they want to be contenders to win the Aviva Premiership Grand Final this season.

Baxter was speaking after seeing his side edged out 26-25 by Gloucester at Sandy Park, with the Chiefs supremo frustrated by what he perceived to be a lack of discipline at crucial moments.

He told reporters: “I’ve said to the lads ‘if you want to play at the end of the league where the big boys play, you have to come in and play like a big boy because teams will come after you’.

“I told the players that I thought we were a more mature and better side than we showed. Consistency has helped us get to where we are in the league at the moment, but then you see moments of madness.

“Our effort, endeavour and work-rate was fantastic, but you can’t give up points as simply as we did.”

The loss was the third in a row for Exeter, who were beaten at Sale Sharks and Bath in their last two Premiership outings, but they remain in the top four ahead of the Sunday round of fixtures.

The Chiefs can be backed at 19.00 to win the Aviva Premiership Grand Final, with Bath 4.00 and Leicester Tigers 7.50.
