Asian ANZ Championship team would be ‘wonderful’ – Netball Singapore CEO

Netball Singapore’s CEO says he supports the idea of Asian-based team in the ANZ Championship

Netball Singapore’s CEO says he supports the idea of Asian-based team in the ANZ Championship.

In an exclusive interview with Guardian Australia, Cyrus Medora one of the most widely respected leaders in international netball, said, “If the ANZ Championships were to expand it would be a wonderful thing for netball but it would require considerable funding and organisation. The format would need to be adapted to make it a fair contest.”

ANZ Championship: West Coast Fever click to become title contenders

After perpetually failing to live up to expectation and promise, Australia’s least successful ANZ Championship side are finally coming good

Currently second behind the Melbourne Vixens in the Australian division after three wins from three starts so far this season, the West Coast Fever have started the season in surprisingly fine style.

They opened the new campaign with a huge upset over the Queensland Firebirds in Brisbane before then making short work of 2011 finalists Northern Mystics 67-51 at home and disposing of the Southern Steel 67-60 last weekend.

Netball Australia open to idea of expanding ANZ Championships to Asia

  • Netball Australia CEO refuses to rule out change after 2017 season
  • Cost of including an Asian side into the competition the main concern

ANZ Championship owners’ Netball Australia and Netball New Zealand are looking at making significant changes to the competition after 2017, and the league is refusing to rule out adding a combined Asian or Asia-Pacific franchise to boost international audience numbers.

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian Australia, Netball Australia CEO Kate Palmer said, “the current format of the ANZ Championship is locked until 2017, after that nothing is off the table. We have to make significant changes if the league is to remain viable. We simply have to change.”

ANZ Championship: renewed calls for reduction in number of Kiwi teams

The debate over the make-up of the tournament is opened up again; Ashleigh Brazill makes a play for the Diamonds; and the World Cup Invitational is called off

In what is becoming a recurring debate, the number of New Zealand teams competing in the ANZ Championship is again under the microscope after Netball Australia CEO Kate Palmer told News Corp that she thought there were too many Kiwi sides in the ANZ Championship.

New Zealand has 143,000 registered netballers; Australia has 360,000 – though both sides field five teams in the competition. There are just 20,000 more registered netballers in New Zealand than in the state of New South Wales, unsurprisingly – the nation has perpetually struggled to field five competitive teams.

Netball Australia chief says sport should remain focused on women

Netball is a women’s game and it needs to stay that way, according to the game’s administrative chiefs

Netball Australia CEO Kate Palmer has said she thinks elite netball would do itself a disservice if it started to promote the men’s game.

“We have no shortage of corporate sponsorship, and I think it’s because companies know that we specifically target women,” Palmer told the Guardian Australia when asked if it was time netball started giving more support to male players by showcasing men’s netball at ANZ Championship or other elite matches.
