Manuel Lanzini double gives West Ham victory over lacklustre Everton

It spoke volumes that the Everton fans did not spring to the defence of their manager when the locals started having fun at Sam Allardyce’s expense. They simply could not be bothered and are unlikely to shed any tears if this limp defeat marks the end …

West Ham make point and Manchester United confirm second-place finish

Marko Arnautovic double lifts West Ham and sinks Southampton

What a relief it was for the West Ham hierarchy that the only boos at the London Stadium floated out of the away end. There were no pitch invasions, no missiles thrown at the directors’ box. David Gold and David Sullivan were able to keep Sir Trevor Br…

Javier Hernández strike sets West Ham on the way to victory over Watford

A semblance of calm has been restored. Instead of directing jeers at the people in the posh seats, the crowd at the London Stadium kept their focus on the pitch throughout, pushing West Ham United to a crucial victory and giving Marko Arnautovic a stan…

Andy Carroll’s late winner against West Brom lifts West Ham out of drop zone

It was the most dramatic of endings. Most people inside the London Stadium had given up hope of seeing a winning goal and West Ham United were contemplating the disappointment of wasting yet another opportunity against one of their relegation rivals. A…

Christian Atsu gives Newcastle edge over West Ham in five-goal thriller

For a manager of Rafael Benítez’s pragmatism, it is unlikely that this barmy game fitted into his vision of how football should be played. Sometimes, however, there is nothing better than winning messily and even Benítez could put his control-freakery …

Cheikhou Kouyaté steadies West Ham ship after Leicester goal threatens mutiny

David Moyes could reflect on his first experience of the London Stadium with a measure of fondness. It was a night of frustration in one sense, bearing in mind that West Ham’s bluntness when they went in search of a late winning goal left them in the b…

Glenn Murray’s double for Brighton puts West Ham’s Slaven Bilic on the rack

Marko Arnautovic helps West Ham to easy victory over Bolton Wanderers

West Ham United could have been forgiven for checking the terms and conditions on the receipt when Marko Arnautovic pressed the self-destruct button in only his second match for the club. That preposterous red card against Southampton last month was certainly not what West Ham had in mind when they made him their record buy in the summer.

They thought they were getting a player with the craft and guile to make them forget about Dimitri Payet, not a £24m hothead who has to issue public apologies after leaving his team-mates in the lurch.

World Athletics Championships: Makwala qualifies for 200m semis in own time trial – live!

6.44pm BST

Makwala celebrated with a few press-ups on the track. What could he possibly be trying to say?

6.43pm BST

Roared on by the crowd, Makwala makes light of the sodden track to finish his solo time trial in 20.20sec! I think he’s fit enough. He’s into the semis, which take place at 8.55pm.

Sophie Hahn breaks her own world record to win another World Para gold

• British 1-2 in T38 100m as Hahn defeats team-mate Kadeena Cox
• Georgina Hermitage also wins her second gold in T37 100m

There was defiance from Kadeena Cox, brilliance from Sophie Hahn, grit from Georgina Hermitage and an awesome show of brute strength from Aled Davies. It was one of those Saturday nights at the London Stadium when it was difficult to know where to look first. Perhaps it was important just to take a moment to consider the beauty of Para sport, to appreciate how far these athletes are willing to push themselves in their pursuit of glory and recognition.

There is an argument that the penultimate evening at the World Para Athletics Championship belonged to Hahn, who shattered her own world record on the way to winning her third consecutive world title in the T38 100m. Her second gold at this competition confirmed her status as one of the finest sprinters of her generation, a remarkable thought given that she is only 20 years old.

Classy Kadeena Cox retains T38 400m crown at World Para Championships

• Briton makes up for bronze medal disappointment on Monday
• Cox ignores hamstring problem to land third world title

Kadeena Cox, unable to perform at her peak because of fatigue and an aching hamstring, offered another demonstration of her class and resolve with a resounding victory in the T38 400m title at the World Para Athletics Championships last night. Cox, who became the first British Paralympian to top the podium in two sports since 1984 when she won athletics and cycling gold at Rio 2016, was a good 40m clear of Japan’s Yuka Takamatsu when she crossed the line in 1min 02.87sec.

Hannah Cockroft makes it a perfect 10 on golden night for GB at Para worlds

• Halifax hurricane wins 10th world title with victory in T34 400m
• Georgina Hermitage sets world record in T37 400m

For all that any contest suffers whenever everyone can predict its likeliest outcome long before the start, the lack of tension that accompanies all of Hannah Cockroft’s races could not diminish her sense of pride after she enhanced her legend at the World Para Athletics Championships.

It matters little to Cockroft that there is more chance of the sun failing to set than her experiencing what it feels like to lose. Entertaining a crowd has never been her driving force. The 24-year-old’s mission is solely to win, which this remarkable wheelchair racer has done with awesome inevitability ever since shooting to prominence at London 2012. It was clear how much it meant when she collected her 10th world title with victory in the T34 400m.

Richard Whitehead accuses International Paralympic Committee of playing with careers

• Whitehead, a double-leg amputee, can’t run 100m at Tokyo 2020
• Sophie Kamlish in surprise T44 100m win against Marlou van Rhijn

Richard Whitehead launched a stinging attacking on the International Paralympic Committee after winning bronze in the T42 100m at the World Para Athletics Championships last night, accusing the organisation of “playing with careers” and “isolating individuals” by excluding double-leg amputees from the event at Tokyo 2020.

The veteran British sprinter said the IPC’s long-stated aim to separate single and double-amputee sprint classes will create unnecessary barriers for Para athletes, leaving him unable to aim for anything other than defending his T42 200m title at the next Paralympic Games, and claimed his Australian rival Scott Reardon has campaigned against his inclusion away from the public eye.
