Claude Puel has dismissed claims that uncertainty over the future of José Fonte may distract his Southampton team going into Thursday’s decisive Europa League tie at home to Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Southampton are willing to sell Fonte in January if they receive a suitable offer for a player whose contract expires at the end of next season. The defender took to Instagram on Tuesday to state that he had been informed by the club that he will not be offered a new deal.

The England prop Joe Marler has been handed a formal warning following an obscene comment he made on social media about the former Australia coach Bob Dwyer.

Marler used Twitter to call Dwyer a wanker in response to his claim that Dan Cole scrummaged illegally during the first Test against the Wallabies. The tweet was quickly deleted but the Rugby Football Union has strict guidelines on the use of social media and has sanctioned Marler, a member of England’s elite player squad.

Michel Platini has filed an appeal against his reduced six-year suspension from football-related activity to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Uefa president and the disgraced Fifa president Sepp Blatter were initially banned from football for eight years by the world governing body’s own ethics committee after being found guilty of a conflict of interest and dereliction of duty over a 2m Swiss francs (£1.35m) “disloyal payment” from Blatter to Platini in 2011.
