Kim Si-Woo makes history with Players Championship victory

• Korean Kim, 21, becomes youngest Players champion
• Ian Poulter is joint-second in first tournament since regaining card

Events of the last month mean Ian Poulter should not be disconsolate at falling short at The Players Championship. He was ultimately denied the completion of a great golfing fairytale by a youngster living one of his own.

Kim Si-Woo, at 21, has become the youngest champion in Players history. How the South Korean deserved it, with a nerveless march down the Sawgrass stretch – that which has caused carnage for bigger names – that belied his age.

Ian Poulter marks change of fortune with charge at The Players Championship

• Englishman is six under and had no a bogey on his third-round card
• JB Holmes and Kyle Stanley lead by one on nine under

It is typical of Ian Poulter to make the most of opportunity. He has made a career out of doing that, frequently in the face of adversity.

Only a fortnight ago it appeared the Englishman’s exemption status on the PGA Tour was no more after he missed the cut at the Texas Open. Salvation subsequently arrived via a recalculation of FedEx Cup points, which swiftly restored him to the upper echelons of a sport to which he has contributed so valuably over the past 20 years. It is standard knowledge that Poulter is not happy just to play on the PGA Tour; his burning ambition is to compete.

Rory McIlroy to have scan on injury but remains in Players contention

• World No2 to have MRI scan on back injury next week
• ‘I’ve been struggling with it a bit. I’ve just sort of been managing it’

Rory McIlroy will have an MRI scan on a back injury next week after confirming the problem still troubled him during the second round of the Players Championship. The four-times major champion is unclear as to the extent of the ailment.

McIlroy revealed on Thursday that back pain had disrupted his build-up to his first event since last month’s Masters. Among those anxious about what results appear in Belfast on Monday will be the European Tour – McIlroy is due to be the marquee player at Wentworth’s BMW PGA Championship from 25 May.

Jason Day finds some early answers and a slightly questionable finish

• Last year’s champion hands back three late shots but finishes two under par
• William McGirt sets the early pace with a 67 at Sawgrass

An indication of Jason Day’s recent dominance of the Players Championship arrived in a moment of adversity. When the former world No1 dropped a shot on his 15th hole of round one, it marked only a fourth bogey since Day started out in the 2016 tournament. He reached what proved to be an unassailable position a year ago without a single blemish on his scorecard in the opening 36 holes.

In securing that title, Day had also endorsed his position as golf’s star performer. It was the Australian’s seventh win in less than a year. Day’s aspirations have shifted; not only is he seeking to become the first man to successfully defend The Players, the 29-year-old is on a mission to recapture the form which has generally deserted him since. He has not won in that spell, with a slide to No3 in the rankings hardly disastrous but quite the turnaround.

Sergio García back in action at TPC after enjoying el clásico honour

• Spaniard has enjoyed a month-long celebration after Masters
• ‘The most important thing is not to change,’ says García

Sergio García has revealed adulation from crowds at el clásico, an environment far removed from golf, has been the finest moment of month-long Masters celebrations. García was afforded ceremonial kick-off duties at the Bernabéu when his beloved Real Madrid hosted Barcelona on 23 April, a fortnight after he ended his major championship drought in emotional circumstances at Augusta National.

“The coolest thing would be the kick‑off at el clásico for sure,” García said. “That was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had.
