Non-league side Eastleigh came within minutes of upsetting Bolton as their FA Cup third-round tie ended all-square.

Darren Pratley spared bottom-of-the-Championship Bolton’s blushes when he pounced on a loose ball in the area to equalise three minutes from time.

Eastleigh – the lowest ranked team left in the cup – led through a Dorian Dervite own goal just after half-time.

The centre-back turned Jai Reason’s dangerous cross past his own goalkeeper as an upset looked on.

Reaction to Saturday’s FA Cup third-round games

The game in Hampshire survived three pitch inspections before finally going ahead.

A crowd of more than 5,000 squeezed into the ground just a short walk from Southampton Airport and almost saw the home side reach the fourth round for the first time in their 70-year history.

Bolton, dogged by financial problems, brought 1,000 of their own supporters, who nearly had a wasted journey.

Troubled Bolton avoid a giant-killing

Bolton unbeaten against non-league sides

Bolton survived a tricky start as Eastleigh striker Yemi Odubade caused problems down the flanks and through the middle.

After the Spitfires took the lead, they came within inches of doubling it 14 minutes from time when Andy Drury’s goal-bound shot was scrambled off the line by David Wheater.

Pratley looked Bolton’s most dangerous threat in attack and was denied in each half by fine saves from home keeper Ross Flitney before eventually firing home unmarked from Liam Feeney’s corner.

And though the Trotters escaped with a replay, they will have to battle past a dogged Eastleigh if they are to come close to matching their 2011 run to the semi-finals.

Would they or wouldn’t they?

Ten Acres pitch hours before kick-off

Eastleigh’s Ten Acres pitch passed a pitch inspection at lunchtime on Saturday

The game was only given the go-ahead 90 minutes before kick-off.

Referee Iain Williamson deliberated with both managers before giving the match the green light.

Following the postponement of Eastleigh’s National League game against Bromley last weekend and a week of heavy showers, a round-the-clock effort from ground staff and volunteers kept the surface just dry enough.

Bolton manager Neil Lennon delayed naming his side until the pitch was finally declared fit.

And, after the game, it was announced that

Bolton had accepted bids

for striker Zach Clough and defender Mark Davies, both of whom were excluded.

Going good to (very) soft

Dorian Devrite's own goal

Dorian Dervite’s own goal is not a thing of beauty but it the most famous goal in the history of Eastleigh, for whom this tie was only their sixth in the FA Cup proper draw

Conditions failed to improve when the game did eventually start.

Large areas of the surface immediately cut up, puddles formed in some quarters and both goalkeepers looked uncertain when clearing their lines.

Eastleigh keeper Flitney nearly opened the scoring in bizarre fashion when his long clearance bounced off a rare dry patch and almost lobbed his opposite number Ben Amos.

Rain started to fall moments before kick-off and continued throughout the first half.

But, the showers ceased during the interval, just in time for the hosts to take the lead through Dervite’s error.

Manager reaction

Eastleigh manager Chris Todd told BBC Radio Solent:

“The players put absolutely everything into it and they’ve given a performance that deserved a win.

“The scenes when we took the lead were incredible. It’s something we’ve never seen before, but it just goes to show what could happen if we achieve what we want to as a football club.

“They won’t be too keen on us coming to their place as we’ve shown how good we can be and the problems we can cause them and it’s going to be an interesting game when the return comes.”

Bolton manager Neil Lennon:

“I wasn’t overly happy with the pitch, one of the worst pitches I have ever seen, but we travelled.

“The referee did say that if it rained he would call it off but I didn’t really fancy coming back so thankfully the game went ahead.

“The pitch was a huge problem with how the game panned out. The pitch is a leveller, they played very well, this is their big day.”

  • Capacity crowd at Valley Parade for last-eight tie
  • Uneven pitch led to just one shot on target
  • Bradford knocked out Chelsea in fourth round
  • Replay on Monday, 16 March

Bradford and Reading must meet again for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals after playing out a tense and scrappy goalless draw at Valley Parade.

Both sides hit the post but it was a game of few clear chances on a testing and uneven surface.

Pavel Pogrebnyak saw his effort strike the woodwork for the visitors while Bradford’s Gary Liddle was denied by the frame from a speculative shot.

The replay at Madejski Stadium is scheduled for Monday, 16 March.

Bradford came into the tie having knocked out Premier League Chelsea and Sunderland en route to the last eight and named the same starting line-up that

beat the Black Cats 2-0

in the fifth round.

Reading had beaten three Championship sides on their way to the quarter-finals and made two changes from the side that

drew 1-1 against Bolton

on Tuesday.

In front of a capacity crowd the hosts from League One put in some determined tackles on their Championship opponents as they sought to press in the early stages, although a weak header from James Hanson was their only chance in the opening 15 minutes.

It fell to the Royals to create the first clear opening when Russian striker Pogrebnyak struck a post with a right-footed shot after latching on to Jamie Mackie’s cross.

Bradford hit the woodwork themselves when midfielder Liddle’s speculative cross almost crept past the stranded Adam Federici.

Bradford had the better of what chances there were in a second half that proved more listless than the first.

Felipe Morais found space moments after the restart but chose to square the ball across goal rather than shoot, while Hanson’s side-footed effort flashed agonisingly wide and Andrew Davies headed just over the bar.

Reading almost snatched a late winner when Oliver Norwood floated a free-kick into the box, but a combination of the post and some desperate defending kept the ball from crossing the line with Pogrebnyak loitering.

Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson:

“We’re still in the hat so we’re pleased with that. You’ve got to give Reading credit – they came and made it difficult. It was a cagey old affair.

“I thought our lads did excellently in a different type of way than against Sunderland. We had to be very professional and wait for the moment to arrive. Unfortunately it didn’t. In the second half we had the momentum but we didn’t have that touch of class in and around the box.

“We look forward to the replay. Everyone will be expecting Reading to win that one but you never know what can happen on the night. We know they’ll approach it differently and look to open up.”

Reading manager Steve Clarke speaking to Match Of The Day:

“For both teams, today was a proper old-fashioned Cup tie. There were plenty of physical challenges with both sides determined not to go out. We hit the woodwork twice, they hit it once. In the second half, they pinned us back more than we would have liked, but we still looked a threat coming forward.

“This is still a dangerous tie for us as they’ve knocked two Premier League teams out. It’s still 50/50 as I see it. Both sides can keep the dream going and see who they might get in the semi-final when the draw is made on Monday.”

Alexis Sanchez scores Arsenal's third goal from a free-kick

Alexis Sanchez scored his 17th and 18th goals of the season against Stoke

  • Arsenal up to fifth with win
  • Koscielny headed early opener
  • Sanchez goals take season total to 18
  • Debuchy dislocates shoulder in first half

Alexis Sanchez scored twice as Arsenal climbed above neighbours Tottenham and into fifth place in the Premier League with a dominant display against Stoke.

Laurent Koscielny took advantage of slack marking to head the hosts into an early lead from Sanchez’s cross.

The Chile international then finished off a neat move with Tomas Rosicky to double Arsenal’s lead before half-time.

Sanchez, 26, added his second goal of the game and 18th of the season from a free-kick shortly after the break.

It proved a relatively routine victory for an Arsenal side and for David Ospina, who retained his place after

the 2-0 FA Cup third round win over Hull.

MOTD2 analysis

Joey Barton: “Technically, Sanchez is not the greatest and does not always hurt the opposition with a great bit of skill.

“Of course, he does have a lot of quality on the ball, but what makes him a fantastic player and such a threat is more related to h is energy and attitude. It feels like Sanchez is constantly in motion and, on top of that, he never gives up.”

It was the 26-year-old Colombia international’s first Premier League start, with Wojciech Szczesny dropped to the bench following reports he was caught smoking in the showers after the New Year’s Day defeat at Southampton.

Stoke were given early warning of Arsenal’s intent when Sanchez and Tomas Rosicky forced goalkeeper Asmir Begovic into saves in the opening five minutes.

And within 60 seconds Koscielny took advantage of Arsenal’s third corner of the match by heading in Sanchez’s delivery.

Arsenal were forced to substitute defender Matthieu Debuchy when he

dislocated his right shoulder

in a challenge from Marko Arnautovic and collided with the advertising boards behind the goal.

Stoke created little throughout the game and their first real chance came when Glenn Whelan blazed a smart free-kick from Bojan over the bar on 25 minutes.

Peter Crouch also headed a tame effort wide from an Arnautovic cross.

Sanchez then stretched Arsenal’s lead with his 17th goal of the season – a low shot in to the bottom left-hand corner after a smart one-two with Rosicky on the edge of the area.

Soon after the break, Sanchez was among the goals again. His free-kick squeezed through the wall and Begovic was unable to stop the ball crossing the line via his body and a post.

By then, the game was over as a contest but Stoke rallied.

Geoff Cameron had a goal ruled out for offside when he strayed ahead of the Arsenal defence from Crouch’s flick-on.

And, as full-time approached, substitute Stephen Ireland forced Ospina into his only real save of note with a low right-foot effort.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger speaking to Match of the Day:

“We had a strong start and we knew that was vital today.

“Alexis Sanchez is one of the best players. He’s a fighter with a combination of talent and fighting spirit which is very difficult to find.

“He plays with passion and you want people to enjoy what they’re doing on the pitch and show it as well.”

Stoke manager Mark Hughes speaking to Match of the Day:

“We feel like we could’ve done better.

“We got off to a poor start and fell behind early. Our confidence waned from then on and we were a little bit slower in our work and our concentration.

“We never got to grips in wide areas really and deal with the talent Arsenal have coming forward. We were well beaten on the day and we can have no complaints.”

  • Van Aanholt first-half strike separates sides
  • Tie was repeat of 1973 final
  • Leeds captain Cooper strikes post with header
  • Jack Rodwell substituted with first-half injury

Patrick van Aanholt marked his return from injury with the winning goal as Sunderland beat Leeds in the FA Cup third round at the Stadium of Light.

The Dutch defender, 24, drilled a low left-foot shot past Leeds goalkeeper Marco Silvestri from the edge of the penalty area in his first start since November.

The scoreline was a repeat of Sunderland’s 1-0 win in

the 1973 final.

Leeds captain Liam Cooper’s hit the post in second-half injury time.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet made six changes to the side which

lost 3-2 against Manchester City on New Year’s Day

as Van Aanholt returned from a shoulder injury.

Leeds manager Neil Redfearn gave debuts to defender Dario Del Fabro and striker Brian Montenegro.

Striker Steven Fletcher had a great chance to open the scoring for Sunderland but failed to keep a right-foot effort from inside the six-yard box under the bar.

Leeds midfielder Casper Sloth cleared a header from Santiago Vergini off the line, but it wasn’t long before the opening goal.

Van Aanholt shot from the edge of the penalty area across the face of goal and found the bottom right-hand corner, off the inside of the post.

Leeds offered more threat in the second half. Striker Adryan was denied just after the restart by a save from the legs of Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.

The visitors were convinced they had a penalty when Charlie Taylor was fouled as he burst down the left wing, but referee Mike Dean gave a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area.

Fletcher was twice denied when he tried to double Sunderland’s lead, first when a shot was ruled out for offside and then soon after when Silvestri palmed away a shot from 12 yards out.

Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell, who played just 16 league games for Manchester City from 2012-2014 after struggling with a hamstring injury, was substituted before half-time with what appeared to be a muscle strain.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet:

“We needed to win at home. It was quite embarrassing that we had played four or five months of football and had won only once, so it was time to win, to have the feeling that we can win at home.

“It was a decent performance in the first half, totally controlled. When you are in that situation, you need to put the game to bed, finish it, score two or three and make sure the second half is just a matter of controlling.

“We didn’t do it and in the second half, Leeds had nothing to lose and they threw themselves forward, which of course created a little bit of nerves in the stadium.”

Leeds manager Neil Redfern on referee Mike Dean not awarding his side a second-half penalty:

“It looked a penalty to me.

“The referee made a decision and you have got to abide by that, but it came on the back of quite a weight of pressure when we were getting in and around their box well.

“A goal at that time to make it 1-1, I think we would have gone on to win it.

“In the second half, I thought we were the better side by a fair stretch. We turned it into a cup tie.

“We got at them and I thought they struggled with it and I thought we were really unlucky today.”

Andre Schurrle put in a lively performance as Chelsea rotated their squad against Sporting Lisbon

  • Chelsea win fourth group game
  • Sporting miss out on knockout stages
  • Schurrle scores on first-team return
  • Debut handed to 18-year-old Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Chelsea rounded off their Champions League group stage with a fourth victory and denied Sporting Lisbon qualification for the knockout stages.

Cesc Fabregas put the home side ahead early on with a penalty after Filipe Luis had been fouled by Ricardo Esgaio.

Andre Schurrle doubled the lead soon after with a low right-foot strike.

Sporting pulled a goal back in the second half through Jonathan Silva, before John Mikel Obi tapped in from a Fabregas free-kick to secure the win.

With Chelsea already guaranteed qualification as group winners, Jose Mourinho made six changes to the side which

lost 2-1 against Newcastle

on Saturday, resting the likes of Willian, John Terry and Eden Hazard.

However, he named a strong side with Nemanja Matic returning to midfield following suspension and goalkeeper Petr Cech captain in his third Champions League appearance of the season.

Among the substitutes was England Under-19 midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, 18, who made his club debut replacing Fabregas in the closing stages.

Sporting – who began the night in second place in Group G and needing a draw to progress to the last 16 – were without on-loan Manchester United winger Nani, due to a thigh injury.

It wasn’t long before Chelsea took the lead from Fabregas’ penalty.

Filipe Luis was clumsily brought down just inside the area by Sporting right-back Esgaio and Fabregas slotted the ball down the middle past goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Chelsea doubled their advantage as Schurrle collected a square ball from Matic 20 yards out, his driving right-foot strike finding the bottom left-hand corner of Patricio’s goal.

Sporting gave themselves a lifeline moments after the interval when Silva’s neat chest down and right-foot shot beat Cech low to his right from inside the penalty area.

But the home side’s two-goal advantage was restored when Mikel got on the end of a Fabregas free-kick as Sporting failed to clear the ball across goal.

Sporting missed out on a place in the last 16 by a point after Schalke – managed by Champions League-winning Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo – won 1-0 away at Slovenian side Maribor.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho speaking on Sky Sports:

“We were very focused and serious. I’m happy with that. I feel sorry for Sporting, I would have liked them to qualify.

“The win was important. It was a good reaction to losing at Newcastle and a good chance for players to have more minutes. I’m happy with many things we did.

“We have a good squad. It was a game without pressures – it was quite an easy game to play.

“Andre Schurrle is in my plans when he’s in top form. He came back from Germany duty very ill. It’s taken him time to recover. He needs to adapt better to the Premier League.”
