NBA finals: Warriors down Cavaliers to win second championship in three seasons

  • Golden State beat Cleveland in Game 5 to take series 4-1
  • Kevin Durant named finals MVP after scoring 39 points in clincher
  • LeBron James scores 41 points but cannot salvage series for Cavs

Exactly five years ago Kevin Durant faced LeBron James in his first NBA finals matchup, ultimately losing 4-1. This year the tables were turned. Durant led the Golden State Warriors to a 129-120 victory over James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5, earning his first championship. It is the supremely gifted Warriors’ second title in three years.

Durant, who was later named the series MVP, put in another great performance, scoring 39 points and becoming the first player with five straight 30-point games in the finals since Shaquille O’Neal in 2000. “It’s just a great group of guys, great community, great arena, great fans,” Durant said after the game. “I’m just so happy to be a part of it. I can’t wait to celebrate with my team-mates in the locker room.”

NBA finals: Unstoppable Warriors beat stunned Cavaliers in Game 2

  • Golden State beat Cleveland 132-113 to take 2-0 lead in series
  • LeBron James records a triple-double but Warriors too strong at home

The Cavaliers put up a strong fight but still fell 132-113 in Game 2 of the NBA finals to the Golden State Warriors, a superteam who are starting to look – and this postseason literally are – unbeatable.

The Cavaliers played significantly better than they did in the first game of the series, but a triple-double from LeBron James, 20 forced turnovers and 15 steals still wasn’t enough to topple the best team in decades. It was Golden State’s 14th consecutive win in the playoffs, besting the longest postseason win streak in league history.
