Dr Richard Freeman, the doctor at the centre of the furore surrounding the delivery of a package of “medical substance” to British riders, will not travel with the team to the cycling Road World Championships this week.

British Cycling said on Saturday Freeman would not accompany the team to the championships in Doha, Qatar. “This was a decision jointly reached by the team management and Richard,” the governing body said. “The riders in Doha will instead be supported by UCI medical team [sic] at the worlds, alongside the usual GBCT support staff.”

Claudio Ranieri may have achieved his first top-tier title in three decades in management but the man who helped inspire Leicester has admitted a tough start to his career in Italy nearly made him give up coaching.

With the Premier League trophy in his hands, Ranieri buried the notion he was eternally the bridesmaid after second-place finishes at Roma, Juventus and Monaco. The 64-year-old Italian’s first teams were the amateur side Vigor Lamezia in Calabria in 1986 and then Puteolana near Naples, and he considered packing the job in, only to be saved by an outbreak of player power and a measure of good fortune.

Alastair Cook’s hold on the England captaincy for the World Cup that begins in February was cast into doubt after the head coach, Peter Moores, said his position would be reviewed after the team’s one-day series in Sri Lanka.

Cook was last week named as captain of a provisional 30-man squad for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand but has continued to cut a beleaguered figure at the helm of the one-day side. The 29-year-old has averaged less than 18 with the bat as the tourists slipped to a 4-2 series defeat in Sri Lanka with one game remaining.
