Castleford hold off Wigan after Jake Trueman hat-trick puts them on course

• Wigan Warriors 20-38 Castleford Tigers
• Teenager produces thrilling all-round display at half-back

Jake Trueman gave Castleford significant reason to be cheerful with a thrilling performance at half-back in place of the injured Luke Gale. The 18-year-old scored a first-half hat-trick of tries to set his side on course for victory, although they had to withstand a strong comeback by Wigan during which a Castleford collapse many had predicted appeared to be happening.

With 20 minutes remaining, Wigan had reduced a 26-0 deficit to 10 points. They looked the stronger side and Castleford’s mettle was being seriously tested, having previously looked supremely comfortable.

Michael McIlorum leads way as Wigan show inexperienced Leeds no mercy

• Wigan 34-0 Leeds
• Oliver Gildart also runs in two tries as Wigan score seven without reply

“It was a no-win situation,” said the Wigan coach, Shaun Wane, of the scenario his side were presented with during this convincing victory: and while he may well be correct, it will not be entirely until a week’s time whether both sides’ preparation for a peculiar evening pays off with a trip to Wembley in August.

For Wigan this was a much-needed victory to build some confidence and form before their Challenge Cup semi-final with Salford next weekend. A side close to Wane’s strongest possible line-up proved too good for Leeds and, in what has been a chastening season for the reigning Super League champions, there will at least be some satisfaction they won with such ease.

Wigan beat Hull FC to reach Grand Final after Anthony Gelling try

• Wigan 28-18 Hull FC
• Anthony Gelling try secures victory in final moments

The Super League play-offs have provided some dramatic games in the competition’s two-decade history but it is difficult even to imagine a game as ridiculous yet sublime as last night’s here in Wigan.

For 40 minutes it appeared nothing less than a formality that Wigan would become the latest side to exploit Hull’s Challenge Cup hangover and reach the Grand Final for the fourth consecutive year.

Corey Thompson’s two tries for Widnes complete second win at Wigan

• Wigan 6, Widnes 8
• Vikings’ rearguard display wins Super 8s match

The record books will have this match down as a narrow defeat for Wigan but scratch beneath the surface and there were far more troubling signs than a mere two-point defeat. The work they have done during the first six months of the season has all-but guaranteed Wigan a play-off semi-final spot but, if there is to be any silverware at the end of it, some improvement is surely required in the coming weeks.

It should not be forgotten that a heroic defensive effort from Widnes went a long way to earning them their second win at Wigan this year – most teams do not even win here once – but the Warriors’ attacking play, or lack thereof, was also exposed on Thursday night in brutal fashion.
