Australia skittled for 106 as Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath bags hat-trick

Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath has taken a hat-trick to rip the heart out of Australia’s first innings on Friday’s second day of the second Test in Galle. The 38-year-old became the 42nd hat-trick taker in Test cricket and just the second Sri Lankan after Nuwan Zoysa’s in 1999 against Zimbabwe.

The veteran left-armer took the wickets of Adam Voges, Peter Nevill and Mitchell Starc as Australia dramatically collapsed from 80-4 to 80-7 in reply to Sri Lanka’s 281. Soon after the Australians were bowled out for 106 – their lowest ever Test score against Sri Lanka – to hand the home side a 175-run first innings lead.
