Mick McCarthy has extended Darren Ambrose’s Ipswich stay.

Darren Ambrose has signed a new deal extension to keep him with Championship promotion chasers Ipswich until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old former Crystal Palace and Birmingham City midfielder, who started his professional career with the Tractor Boys, returned in September on a short-term contract.

It’s been a difficult few years, not playing. But I’ve got the love back now, playing with this team and this manager.

Despite only making six appearances for Mick McCarthy’s side and securing his first start in Sunday’s FA Cup third-round draw against Southampton at St Mary’s, in which he scored Town’s goal in a 1-1 draw, he is delighted to be staying until the summer.

He said: “It’s been a difficult few years, not playing. But I’ve got the love back now, playing with this team and this manager.

“It’s changed my opinion of football once again and now I love it again.”

Ambrose will now look to help Ipswich back to the Premier League between now and May as they currently sit in second spot in the Championship on 47 points – one point behind leaders Bournemouth.

Town, who are 2.50 to win promotion, face third-placed Derby County at home on Saturday and they are 2.62 to win, the Rams are 2.62 to secure the three points and the draw is 3.25.
