Alonso exit confirmed

Ferrari have confirmed Fernando Alonso has left the Italian outfit following weeks of speculation surrounding the Spaniard’s future.

The two-time world champion has agreed to part company with Ferrari, despite having two more years left on his deal with the F1 team.

For a number of weeks Alonso has been strongly linked with a move away from the Scuderia, where he managed to win 11 races since he joined the team in 2010.

The 33-year-old, who is preparing for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend, has admitted it has been tough to call time on his spell with Ferrari.

He said: “It was a difficult decision to take, but a carefully considered one from start to finish.

“My love for Ferrari was a prime consideration.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, these five years produced some of the best moments of my career and I also feel that, in leaving the team, it is family rather than friends I am leaving behind.”

Alonso is 6.00 to secure a place on the podium in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, in the final race of the 2014 campaign.
