Adkins laughs off West Brom talk

January 07, 2014 15:50:42 UK

Former Southampton boss Nigel Adkins remains committed to Reading even though he continues to be linked with the vacant managerial post at West Brom.

The Baggies have been searching for a new manager since before Christmas when they parted company with Steve Clarke and 48-year-old Adkins is 29.00 to be their next permanent manager.

However, Adkins says he is determined to lead Reading back to the Premier League – the Royals are 10.00 to be promoted from the Championship this season, even though they have faltered in recent weeks – while West Brom are 9.00 to be relegated from the top-flight.

“A chancer puts on £25 and the bookie takes the odds all the way down,” joked Adkins.

“All my focus and energies are on trying to do what’s right at Reading. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes to get the future right, and obviously we’re in the transfer window now, indicating there’s a lot going on because we’ve got to get our league campaign back on track.

“It’s frustrating at the moment because we’re not used to losing games of football, but all you can do is keep working very, very hard.

“We want to do well here and I’m sure during the course of this month things will be resolved and we give ourselves an opportunity to climb the league table. All being well there’ll be stability.”

Former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay is 7.00 to be West Brom’s next permanent manager while Dave Jones is available at 13.00.
