Close games have been a hallmark of 2017, but what has been even more distinguishing is the relative absence of frequent blowouts

Thus far, the 2017 AFL season has been defined by its tight competition, with any team a genuine chance of beating any other on a given day. More than once, a team near the foot of the ladder has defeated one near the top and, as of the end of round 20, the final eight is still far from decided.

But just how close has it really been? Quantitatively, what can we say about the closeness of the 2017 home-and-away season in an historical context?
